I totally love the crocus idea. I will have to file that for when we have some land. We have 2 small compost piles held together with chicken wire. But they have to move to make room for the chicken coop

Not at all. The crocuses will be done blooming by the time the lawn needs its first mow of the season.

As much as I’d love to take credit for it, I must confess, I learned it from Roger Cook on an episode of This Old House.
